"Tides of Creation" is part of my The Female Journey series and features a pregnant mermaid bathed in the glow of a red supermoon, symbolising fertility, womanhood, and the cycles of life. The mermaid, adorned with pearls on her ears and a pearl necklace, reflects the deep connection between the moon, water, and the feminine essence. Pearls, often associated with the moon and water, are powerful symbols of fertility and the sacred cycles that govern both the ocean and womanhood. Their presence in this piece underscores the mystical link between the moon’s influence on the tides and the menstrual cycles, highlighting the natural rhythms that define the feminine experience.
 
The inclusion of tropical fish not only connects this work to my childhood but also grounds it in the natural world, intertwining personal history with the universal experience of motherhood. This painting is deeply personal for me, created as a tribute to a dear friend who tragically lost her life while giving birth. Her story is one of many, a reflection of the reality that approximately 800 women die globally each day due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. This statistic is a haunting reminder of the dangers that accompany the miracle of life and highlights the urgent need for improved maternal healthcare worldwide. The global maternal mortality rate remains unacceptably high, particularly in low-resource settings, where access to quality care is limited.
 
This painting invites you to reflect on the beauty and deep anxieties of motherhood, acknowledging not only the profound joy of creation but also the very real dangers and losses that accompany it. It stands as a tribute to the sacred role of women as creators, dreamers, and nurturers, who carry within them the strength of the tides and the wisdom of the stars, even in the face of unimaginable loss. Through this piece, I seek to honour the memory of those who have faced the ultimate sacrifice and to raise awareness of the pressing need for change in maternal healthcare, ensuring that fewer women have to face such a devastating fate.
