“What The Landscape Gave Me” offers a universal narrative for women, a space where every woman can find her story reflected in the layers of ink, wax, and gold that make up this landscape. The figure of the woman etched into the painting is more than a silent witness; she carries the weight of countless stories—stories of fertility, of miscarriage and the often unspoken struggles with infertility. She stands as a testament to the profound and often hidden pain that accompanies these experiences.
A woman is born with approximately 1 to 2 million eggs, yet she will only experience around 400 ovulations in her lifetime. The intentional white dots spread across the landscape represent ovulation, marking each fleeting opportunity for life that a woman experiences during her reproductive years. Scattered across the sky are symbols of potential embryos, visualising the dreams of life that may or may not come to fruition. This dynamic between the earth and sky mirrors the hopes and heartbreak tied to a woman’s body—what she can give, what she might lose, and the uncertainty in between.
With miscarriage affecting 1 in 4 pregnancies and countless women facing infertility or loss, this painting is not only about possibility but also about the resilience needed to endure the struggles and griefs of the female journey.
The narrative deepens further as it honours the emotional complexity of pregnancy and postpartum depression, acknowledging that even in the joy of new life, there can be deep, hidden pain. For some women, the landscape represents this battle—the feeling of being overwhelmed and isolated in the postpartum period, trying to reconcile the joy of motherhood with the emotional struggles it can bring. Meanwhile, others may interpret the piece through the lens of abortion and the profound emotions surrounding the choice to end a pregnancy or the conscious choice to not become a mother and to live with this decision throughout her life. The painting holds space for every woman’s story—whether it’s one of choice, loss, or struggle—and it invites them to find their own narrative in its layers.
The title of my art piece “What The Landscape Gave Me” is a homage to Frida Kahlo, inspired by her own work and personal battles with infertility, miscarriage, and abortion. Kahlo’s life and art have long inspired me, and her work has symbolised resilience in the face of personal and physical pain. This piece seeks to echo that same strength. Like Frida, this painting stands as a reminder that beauty and struggle are often intertwined and that every woman’s story is unique, valid, and deeply personal.
My hope is that this painting allows women to hold their own experiences within it, to interpret it in a way that resonates with their journey. It’s a painting meant to invite reflection, storytelling, and connection, offering not just visual beauty but a space for healing and understanding. May this artwork be a reminder that within every landscape—whether emotional, physical, or spiritual—there is a story waiting to be shared.
